His grand aunt,  Charuma,  was a spirit medium in Masvingo, Zimbabwe, a woman of Great Zimbabwe descent whose knowledge of the land ran deeper than roots. She knew the herbal medicines hidden in bark and leaf. She could read the stars not as poetry but as navigation, teaching the children before they could herd cattle how to find their way home by the African sky. And then there was the story she told - of the day she got lost in the bush searching for remedies, sat down in the quiet, and a lioness appeared. She did not run. The lioness did not threaten. She simply rose, and Charuma followed her - all the way back to the trail home.

That story never left him. It became the compass by which he guides.

Tendekayi - known simply as Tende - grew up between two worlds: the discipline of boarding school in Zimbabwe, and the holidays spent in the rural heartland of Masvingo, where time moved differently and the bush was not a backdrop but a living presence. He herded cattle for days alongside older herd boys and trekkers, learning to read the land the way others learn to read a page. Charuma taught him African astrology - not as mysticism but as practical science, the ancient art of navigation by stars, wind, cloud, heat and sun.

His guiding is not a career built on qualifications alone, but what Tende calls an act of devotion.

"My guiding is in honour of her and my ancestral spirits," he says. "Honouring respect, in-depth connection with everything around. To walk like this is to honour my bloodline without word."

He has had his own encounters he does not easily explain - personal, supernatural moments with animals in the wild, connections that crossed the boundary between observer and observed, between guide and creature, into something closer to brotherhood. He does not offer these stories as performance, but instead offers them as testimony - evidence of what becomes possible when a human being is fully present, fully listening, fully inside the circle of life rather than standing at its edge watching.

"I cannot explain it in words," he says simply. "Experiencing time with me is the only way I transmit this resonance."

For Tende, a transformative experience has a precise meaning. It is not a beautiful sunset or a close lion sighting, though those moments may be part of it. It is the instant when the person he is guiding connects - when they begin to understand that the behaviour of a bird, the shift in wind, the heat coming off the earth, the movement of clouds - all of it is language. All of it is information. And once you learn to read it, you carry it with you for the rest of your life.

"From the wind, the clouds, the heat, the sun," he says. "The silent whispers that talk with the wind."

Co-owner of Makubi Safari Camp in Nyerere National Park, Tanzania, Tende is as comfortable in the ocean as he is in Big Five territory. A PADI-certified diver, he moves between terrestrial and marine ecosystems with equal fluency, from walking safaris through the African savanna to exploring the underwater world off the coasts of Mozambique, Réunion, and Mauritius. Around the fire at night, beneath the open African sky, he weaves African astrology and ancestral wisdom into the kind of fireside conversation that guests find themselves thinking about long after they've returned home.

His guiding footprint spans Tanzania, Kenya, South Africa, Mozambique, Eswatini, Lesotho, Botswana, Zambia, Rwanda, Uganda, Malawi, Madagascar, Réunion and Mauritius. He holds FGASA Level 3, one of the highest professional guiding qualifications on the continent.

When asked recently about an unexpected Forbes feature, an honour that came without warning, he described it as "a grateful and exciting moment" for himself, for APGN and for the Madagascar tour community. That kind of grounded, unaffected humanity is precisely what makes him rare.

Tende's vision for every guest he guides is as quiet as it is profound:
