Peter Kamau
Born at the foothills of Kilimambogo - locally known as Buffalo Mountain - in Kenya, Peter Kamau's connection to the natural world began at an early age. Raised by parents who were primary school teachers, he grew up in an environment that fostered learning, curiosity and a deep respect for nature.
His first meaningful encounter with wildlife came during primary school through the Wildlife Clubs of Kenya (WCK). It was there that Peter first looked through a pair of binoculars to observe a simple yet transformative moment that quietly set the course for his life. That early experience sparked a lifelong passion for wildlife, conservation and guiding.
Although his parents hoped he would follow in their footsteps and become a teacher, Peter chose a different path. After completing high school, he pursued a diploma in Tour Guiding and Administration before studying German at the Goethe-Institut, broadening his cultural understanding and strengthening his ability to connect with international travelers.
Peter's career has been both rewarding and demanding. Over the years, he has tracked wounded lions through tall grass, been treed by elephants, rhinos and Cape buffalo, charged by hippos, stalked by hyenas and African wild dogs and crossed crocodile-infested luggas in the Maasai Mara while conducting anti-poaching and de-snaring patrols. These experiences forged a guide with exceptional fieldcraft, calm decision-making under pressure and a profound respect for wildlife and wilderness.
During COVID-19 pandemic Peter used the pause to invest in his professional development. He completed both KPSGA and FGASA training, earning Gold Level Guide, NQF Level 2, NQF Level 4, Professional Field Guide and Trails Guide qualifications becoming the first Kenyan to hold professional guiding qualifications from both KPSGA and FGASA.
Building on this achievement, Peter transitioned into guide training, focusing on mentorship, guiding development and raising professional standards within the safari industry. Through his guide training company, he designs and delivers customized training programmes for guides across East Africa, helping to shape the next generation of professional safari guides.
Beyond guiding and training, Peter is deeply committed to conservation and community engagement. He has participated in habitat restoration, reforestation projects, anti-poaching patrols, wildlife rescue operations, and citizen science initiatives, including MaKenya (Mammal Atlas Kenya) and Kenya Birds Trend. Throughout his career, he has collaborated with organizations such as the Kenya Wildlife Service, David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, Mara Conservancy and other conservation partners.
Peter's commitment to continuous learning has taken him beyond Kenya, with professional training, conferences, and educational exchanges in South Africa, Italy (Syracuse) and Cyprus.
