Douglas Gachucha Gathungu

Douglas Gachucha Gathungu was born and raised on the shores of Lake Naivasha, where he developed a deep connection to wildlife from a young age. Educated near a private game ranch, he was exposed to frequent wildlife interactions, sparking his passion for the tourism industry. Witnessing tourist vehicles passing through his school and visiting inspired him to pursue a career in tourism.

After completing his primary education, Douglas pioneered the first wildlife club at his secondary school. Despite financial challenges preventing him from pursuing tertiary education in tourism, he volunteered with a community environmental conservation group, focusing on bird watching - a passion he continues to pursue actively.

In 2003, Douglas achieved Bronze Level certification from the Kenya Professional Safari Guides Association, marking the beginning of his professional guiding career. He has since guided individuals, organized groups, and various tourism companies across Kenya. Committed to environmental awareness, he volunteers to educate schools and groups and trains local guides through initiatives like the Lake Naivasha Nature Club.

Douglas played a pivotal role in conserving the mountain bongo in Eburru Forest, collaborating closely with local communities, Rhino Ark, and Eburru Rafiki. His expertise in the flora and fauna of Eburru Forest earned him recognition in the Eburru Forest Guide Book as an eco-tourism guide.

Recognizing tourism's competitive nature, Douglas pursued further studies at Tempo College, obtaining a diploma in Tour Guiding and Tour Administration. This educational background enhances his ability to provide reliable and competitive private guiding services to both local and international tourists.

His passion for ornithology has taken him on expeditions throughout East Africa, including trips to northern Kenya and Ethiopia in search of endemic bird species. He has also explored Uganda's major tourist circuits, enriching his understanding of regional wildlife and ecosystems.

Douglas cherishes moments spent on walking safaris, boat excursions, and full-day game drives, where he interprets nature's intricacies. He finds particular joy in nighttime bonfire sessions, stargazing, and listening to the sounds of Africa, including frog calls - a subject he studied passionately due to their significance as environmental indicators.

With a wealth of experience and a profound love for nature, Douglas Gachucha Gathungu brings a dedicated and passionate approach to the tourism industry, believing his expertise will significantly benefit the African Private Guide Network.
