Camilla Frasca Caccia
Almost three decades in the Kenyan bush have taught Camilla Frasca Caccia that no two safaris are ever the same, and that there is always something more to discover.
An Italian-born safari guide, Camilla came to Kenya with a fascination for Africa and gradually made it her home, her profession and her greatest passion. Almost three decades later, she still feels the same pull every time she heads into the bush.
Over the course of her career, Camilla has guided throughout Kenya, developing a broad knowledge of the country's diverse landscapes and ecosystems, from the open plains and mountains of the south to the forests, lakes and wilderness areas further north. She has a particularly deep connection with the Greater Tsavo Ecosystem, as well as Amboseli and the Chyulu Hills, while her experience extends across Kenya and its remarkable variety of habitats and wildlife.
For Camilla, the real skill of a guide is not simply knowing where the animals are, but instead reading the signs of the bush that were left in the minutes before you arrived; a set of tracks crossing a road, a sudden silence among the birds, elephants changing direction, or an animal suddenly becoming alert, these are the clues that fascinate her. She loves putting those pieces together and, perhaps even more, teaching her guests to see them too.
Her guiding is therefore less about ticking animals off a list and more about following a story as it unfolds. understanding what guests are seeing. She takes particular pleasure in explaining the behaviour, ecology and natural history behind each encounter, translating detailed knowledge into clear, precise and engaging stories that bring the wildlife and the landscape to life. Whether explaining why an elephant has chosen a particular route, how predators and prey respond to one another, or what a track can reveal about an animal's movements, she wants her guests to leave each sighting understanding not just what they have seen, but why it happened. Camilla is happiest when there is no need to rush, when guests become absorbed in what is happening around them and start noticing the small things for themselves.
She has a particular passion for tracking, wildlife behaviour and photography, and for the details of the natural world that are easily overlooked. She can happily spend time with a single animal or following a spoor, simply to understand where the story leads. Her curiosity is infectious, and she has a knack for turning what might initially seem like a small detail into one of the most memorable moments of a safari.
After almost three decades in the field, Camilla's knowledge extends well beyond wildlife. She has watched Kenya's landscapes and conservation challenges change, and enjoys sharing the bigger picture with her guests, the relationship between wildlife, people, land and the future of wild places.
There is also a distinctly Italian side to her guiding. Camilla brings natural warmth, generosity and an eye for detail to her safaris, creating an atmosphere that is as much about good conversation, curiosity and enjoying the journey as it is about wildlife. She believes that feeling comfortable with your guide is an important part of being able to truly experience a place.
Her qualifications include KPSGA Silver, FGASA Nature Guide and CyberTracker Level II.
Ask Camilla what keeps her excited after all these years and the answer is simple:
“The bush is never the same twice. A fresh track after rain, an unexpected behaviour, a new light on an old landscape or an encounter that nobody could have planned for can still make her stop and watch”
And that is ultimately what she hopes to give her guests, not just a collection of wildlife sightings, but the ability to look at the African wilderness differently, with more curiosity, more understanding and a little more wonder.
