Awel Sultan
Awel Sultan was born and raised in one of Ethiopia’s most spectacular natural treasures - Bale Mountains National Park, often called “One Park, Many Worlds.” Growing up surrounded by wildlife and the melodic calls of highland birds, Awel developed a deep connection to nature from an early age. His father, a dedicated conservationist with the Ethiopian Wolf Conservation Project (EWCP), played a key role in shaping his passion for wildlife through his work monitoring endangered Ethiopian wolves, administering vaccinations, and engaging with local communities to promote coexistence.
Following in his father’s footsteps, Awel began his career with the Frankfurt Zoological Society (FZS) as a para-ecologist, collecting ecological data and contributing to vital surveys across the Bale Mountains. This early work built a strong foundation in field research and ecosystem protection.
After three years with FZS, Awel joined Bale Mountain Lodge as a professional guide, leading guests through the park’s remarkable landscapes and habitats. During this time, he received advanced training in wildlife behavior and bird ecology (including bird ringing) through a collaboration with the University of Utah.
Eager to expand his knowledge, Awel later traveled to South Africa for professional training in botany, herpetology, ornithology, and geography - a transformative experience that broadened his perspective on conservation and guiding.
Upon returning to Ethiopia, Awel joined one of the country’s leading luxury safari companies and a five-time Travel + Leisure award winner. He has since guided travelers through Ethiopia’s extraordinary diversity - from the ancient historical circuits of Lalibela, Aksum, Gheralta, Gondar, and Harar, to the wildlife-rich landscapes of Borena, Simien Mountains, Alledghe, Awash, Bale, Omo, Mago, and Gambela National Parks.
Awel is known for his professionalism, patience, and inclusive approach to guiding. His broad expertise in Ethiopian wildlife, birdlife, culture, and history makes him an exceptional host for both photographers and travelers. He has worked with authors of the Lonely Planet and Bradt guidebooks, and served as a location manager for National Geographic’s Human Evolution film crew and for Lamb, one of Ethiopia’s top film productions.
Through years of experience, Awel has come to believe that guiding is about more than sharing information - it is about creating meaningful connections between people, wildlife, and place. Ever curious and open to learning, he continues to share his deep love for Ethiopia’s natural and cultural heritage with every guest he leads.
