<image:title>Guides Old - Jackson Looseiya</image:title>
<image:caption>Jackson certainly has an extraordinary life-story; Jackson grew up in the heart of the Maasai Mara. With a hunter for a father, who spent time in jail for his poaching activities, it was through his time in the bush that Jackson was trained in the ways of the wild. In 1980, Jackson’s fate now took a dramatic turn; safari expert, Ron Beaton, offered to train Jackson as a guide. In the 1980's there were no Maasai guides working in the Mara and so this was very innovative. With the Maasai Mara as his office, he works every day watching and following the Big Cats’ he knows every mound, bush and river. Little wonder that he was brought in to enhance the popular BBC series Big Cat Live - making him a household name. In recent years, Jackson has once again gone above and beyond, by starting his own safari camp in the Maasai Mara. This beautiful destination is, of course, a place that Jackson loves to take all his privately guided groups. <image:title>Guides Old - Tim Leperes</image:title>
<image:caption>Timothy Leperes, always referred as Tim, was born in Samburu, in the Northern Frontier District of Kenya. Tim’s knowledge comes from growing up in close contact with the wildlife of his home area, Samburu. He says he was always fascinated with wildlife and with his grandfather’s campfire stories about lion hunts and herding cattle amongst the wildlife. It was his grandfather that would share his advice about animal behaviour, dispensing information about what to look out for when taking the cattle, sheep and goats to the river or to waterholes. The stories would include encounters with buffalos, elephants, lions and leopards and Tim now uses the lessons learned from those stories as a safari guide and photographer. The job of a field guide is often glamorised. It can be an extremely rewarding career and in fact is probably better described as a lifestyle. It is also incredibly hard work requiring a commitment and dedication to long hours, irregular schedules, tough conditions (often having to work outdoors in rain and extreme cold), potential danger and probably most importantly, solitude and very little social life in (often) isolated and remote locations. The benefits and positives do, however, outweigh the hardships and negatives with the biggest plus being the opportunity to live and work in areas that most people only dream about visiting while experiencing a quality of life that is second to none. As a field guide you get to meet people from all walks of life, you have unparalleled opportunities to view wildlife, to witness spectacular wildlife interactions, and to take awesome photographs on a daily basis, but probably most importantly you are in the unique position to educate people about our most precious resource, the natural world around us, and in so doing contribute toward a sustainable future! Guiding can be an extremely rewarding career and in fact is probably better described as a lifestyle. The job of a field guide (or ranger as they are called in some areas) is often glamorized. Tim has worked as a walking and safari guide in the wider Laikipia region, Maasai Mara, as well as leading trips in Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda and Botswana. He has worked as wildlife Presenter for WildEarth TV. Tim’s interest in photography was a parallel track, a creative expression that first showed up as an interest in abstract artwork. As Tim tells it, “my arts and crafts class was the best. I loved drawing and sketches. This, of course, built up my interest in photography as most of my paintings and sketches were from looking at wildlife magazines. After many years of guiding, I was gifted a camera by a close friend who thought my art should be in taking photos and of wildlife since I spend almost an entire year in the African wilderness. He gifted me a Canon T3 Rebel, I bought a lens and began shooting. I later bought myself a different camera which has now become my second baby.” Tim Leperes won the EcoTripMatch.com Best Nature Tour Guide award through a global, online vote that included 321 cities and 63 countries. People nominate nature tour guides from all over the world annually. His work has been featured in magazines (Shadow and Light Magazine) and some of his photos have been sold online and to friends. He is inspired by many things, clicking the shutter when a scene or subject captures a moment in time. “My inspiration lies in not being like everyone else. In fact, what I try to do is non-conventional. Perhaps this is my way of standing out, but I see it as me being myself. Tim has an avid interest in all aspects of fauna and flora, a particular interest in diversifying his knowledge-base to include as broad a spectrum of environmental topics, natural science subjects and wildlife destinations as possible. <image:title>Guides Old - Paul Kirui</image:title>
<image:caption>Paul, one of Kenya’s most distinguished safari guides, was born on the northern outskirts of the Masai Mara Game Reserve, where the rhythm of the African wilderness was woven into his upbringing. From a young age, Paul herded cattle across the vast savannah, developing an intimate connection with the land, its flora, and its diverse wildlife. This early immersion in the natural world fostered a deep passion for conservation and a lifelong dream of working in the safari industry. Paul’s path to becoming a leading guide took him through rigorous academic and professional training in both Kenya and South Africa, where he earned degrees in natural history and professional guiding. His education, combined with his innate understanding of the bush, has made him a sought-after expert in the region, particularly in the study and tracking of Africa's great apes, including leopards, chimpanzees, and gorillas. His expertise has not gone unnoticed; since 2006, Paul has been a key collaborator with the BBC Natural History film unit, serving as a Big Cat tracker and consultant on celebrated productions such as Big Cat Week, Big Cat Live, and Disney’s The Truth About Lions. However, it is his unparalleled knowledge of primates that truly sets him apart. Paul is widely recognized as one of East Africa’s top guides for primate-focused expeditions, leading groups through the dense forests of Rwanda, Uganda, and the Congo in search of these remarkable creatures. Paul’s achievements extend beyond guiding. He is one of only 30 Gold Level guides in Kenya, a prestigious certification that reflects his exceptional skill and dedication to the craft. His contributions to the industry were further recognized when he was awarded the "Best Guide of the Year" by the Eco-Warrior Awards in both 2016 and 2017. Committed to raising the standards of safari guiding across East Africa, Paul established Tanzania’s first training school for safari guides in the Serengeti and has played a pivotal role in training programs in Rwanda and Uganda. His leadership in the field is further underscored by his tenure as a director of the Kenya Professional Safari Guides Association (KPSGA). Based in Kenya, Paul guides across East Africa, specializing in expeditions to Rwanda, Uganda, and Congo—regions renowned for their populations of great apes. Paul offers an exceptional safari experience, blending his deep-rooted knowledge, academic expertise, and decades of practical experience to create unforgettable journeys into the heart of Africa’s wilderness. <image:caption>Born and raised in Kenya, growing up Zarek took every opportunity to go camping, hiking, or on safari and developed a deep connection to East Africa’s wilderness areas. A safari with Zarek is defined by his wide-eyed wonder at the natural world, from hopping through muddy puddles trying to catch frogs to slowly roving a riverbank searching for an elusive leopard. As a Gold Level guide, Zarek is familiar with local wildlife, cultures, and landscapes, including less visited destinations such as Gabon and Chad. He also holds a “Level 2” qualification with the Field Guides Association of Southern Africa (FGASA), and a “Level 3 Track & Sign” qualification with Cybertracker, a non-profit network for wildlife trackers. These widely-recognized qualifications have provided him with useful tools to interpret the signs and behaviours of wildlife encountered on safari. Although a Kenyan by birth and a qualified guide, Zarek understands the importance and need to not take for granted the collective, traditional knowledge systems of Africa's indigenous peoples. Zarek holds the utmost respect for the ancient wisdom and skills held by local cultures that he believes he could never hope to attain in full. Zarek strives to include representatives of Africa's rich diversity of ethnicities throughout his safaris to intertwine this wealth of knowledge into the fabric of every safari. <image:title>Guides Old - Professor Willis Oketch</image:title>
<image:caption>Few in the APGN community can boast a bio as extensive and multifaceted as that of Pr. Willis. More than just a safari guide, Pr. Willis is an esteemed environmental historian of Africa, whose academic pursuits have profoundly shaped his approach to guiding. His research delves deep into the complex history and nature of human-wildlife conflicts, the evolution of African environmental ideologies, and the role of national parks as emblems of ethnic identity. These scholarly interests inform every aspect of his work, making his safaris not only visually stunning but also intellectually enriching experiences. Pr. Willis divides his time between the lecture halls of Houston State University, where he imparts his vast knowledge to students, and the vast landscapes of the African bush, where he guides with unparalleled expertise. Despite his academic commitments, his heart has always belonged to the wild. In fact, it was the challenge of securing consistent, high-quality bookings in the early days of his guiding career that led him to explore academia some 20 years ago. This foray into the academic world has only enriched his guiding, allowing him to seamlessly blend historical narratives with live wildlife encounters, creating a safari experience that is as educational as it is awe-inspiring. Pr. Willis is often referred to as the ‘Godfather of Safari Guides in Kenya,’ a title that reflects his deep influence on the profession. His contributions extend beyond the field; he has played a pivotal role in shaping the future of safari guiding in Kenya by authoring the exams that aspiring guides must pass to earn their KPSGA certifications. His involvement in the development of these standards ensures that the next generation of guides upholds the same level of excellence and integrity that Pr. Willis embodies. With a career that bridges the worlds of academia and the wild, Pr. Willis offers an unparalleled safari experience, where each moment is infused with the richness of Africa’s history and the thrill of its wildlife. <image:caption>James is one of Kenya’s best up and coming guides. At only 26, he has experience beyond his years having worked as a Head Guide in a small, boutique tented safari camp in Laikipia. As a young Samburu boy, James would spend time learning about animals and plants as he herded his family’s goats and cows out to graze. His younger years spent on foot, out in the wilds of northern Kenya, means he is a superb spotter and an expert at reading wildlife behaviour. In his spare time, James works to support Kids On Safari - a charity he co-founded to bring positive wildlife interactions to the children of his tribal community, many of which has negative views on wildlife, as crop invaders or cow killers. By encouraging a love of the natural planet, James brings hope to new generations of safari guides in the making. James believes that a private guide is a vital addition to any safari in Africa. With the expert hosting, sharing of stories and bringing real life indigenous history that a guide brings to a trip, guests will leave with a more well rounded and deeper love James’ home. <image:title>Guides Old - James Mungai</image:title>
<image:caption>James was born on the Kikuyu escarpment bordering Nairobi to the northwest. At an early age in primary school in the 80’s, he started visiting the National Museums of Kenya and Nairobi National Park as a Scout member. This is how he fell in love with nature, a love that he has nurtured throughout his life. James completed secondary school in 1992 and had no doubt about what he wanted to do in life, so he transferred his hobby into a permanent career. He spent much time in the libraries of the Museums studying Natural History between 1993 and 1997, tackling such subjects as mammalogy, entomology, botany, osteology, ornithology, anthropology and geology. In 1997, he took his first exams in Tour Guiding, and is among the few Gold Level Guides out of thousands under the membership of Kenya Professional Safari Guide Association (KPSGA). <image:title>Safari - Singita Mara River Camp - Lamai, Tanzania</image:title>
<image:caption>Recommended by: Senchura Kaleku Singita Mara River Tented Camp is located on the northern banks of the world-renowned Mara River in the Lamai triangle. This area boasts one of the highest year-round concentrations of wildlife in the Serengeti National Park, thanks to its distinctive soil composition. This includes resident plains game, big cats and elephant, in addition to enormous populations of crocodile and hippo in the Mara River. Singita Mara River Tented Camp was built “off-the-grid”, seeking to eliminate the unnecessary use of energy and non-biodegradable materials. The camp instead relies on a custom designed solar power system and the use of only recycled and natural materials. As an ecotourism and conservation brand, Singita is unwavering in its commitment to preserve and protect Africa’s wilderness for future generations and since opening its first property – Singita Ebony Lodge – in 1993, sustainability, environmentally conscious hospitality and the empowerment of local communities have been cornerstones of this enduring 100-year purpose.</image:caption>

<image:title>Safari - Reteti Elephant Sanctuary - Namunyak, Kenya</image:title>
<image:caption>Recommended by: Ruth Wachera (Finance Manager) Africa’s first community owned elephant sanctuary situated in Northern Kenya. The Sanctuary takes in orphaned and abandoned elephant calves with the aim to release them back into the wild herds adjoining Reteti. This is the result of a widely recognised and expanding grassroots movement of community-driven conservation across Northern Kenya; a movement that is growing new economies, transforming lives and conserving natural resources. The Reteti keepers are all recruited from within Namunyak Conservancy. The Samburu have been living alongside wildlife for thousands of years and have deep respect for elephants with whom they share the land and its resources. The keepers have been formally trained in the care, rehabilitation and release of elephant calves. A day visit, which includes a private visit to the morning feeding, makes for a perfect addition to a safari in northern Kenya. A charter flight from your lodge or camp, through the wilds of northern Kenya, to the sanctuary is an addition I love organising for guests and guides - the experience is always a highlight!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Recommended by: Senchura Kaleku Set on the wide-open plains of the eastern Serengeti where the sky seems to meet the earth, Namiri Plains enjoys a remote and exclusive location. With ten stylish tented suites, one family suite, and two luxurious Retreats, your stay here is a seamless blend of indoor/ outdoor living. Before Namiri Plains was built, these grasslands were closed to tourism for 20 years while the cheetah population was restored and researched. Upon expiry of the research lease, we were proud to be offered the rights to establish the first safari camp in this unchartered corner of the Serengeti. Our safari guides established the road networks, tracked the different prides and families across the plains, and embraced the guardianship of Namiri Plains. It is this bond, and the knowledge our guides hold, that allows them to deliver an unparalleled safari experience.</image:caption>

<image:title>Safari - Angama Mara - Maasai Mara, Kenya</image:title>
<image:caption>Recommended by: Chris Maina (Operations Manager) Angama is inspired by the Swahili word for 'suspended in mid-air'. Located high above the floor of Africa’s Great Rift Valley, Angama Mara is a remarkable safari lodge overlooking Kenya’s world famous Maasai Mara. Here guests will find a lodge where everything is as it ought to be: two intimate camps of just 15 Tented Suites each, access to the Mara below, tailor-made safari days and a famously warm Kenyan welcome. The lodge’s remarkable setting overlooks what many safari travellers deem the finest game reserve on the continent, Kenya’s Maasai Mara. Angama Mara’s Tented Suites stretch out over two kopjes on the edge of the Oloololo Escarpment. The third kopje is immediately recognisable as the site where many of the most memorable scenes from Out of Africa were filmed. The Maasai Mara never fails to deliver extraordinary wildlife sightings: prides of lion, solitary leopards, the shy black rhino and abundant herds of elephant and buffalo are all to be found here in and amongst bountiful plains game. Head out at sunrise with a picnic breakfast and be back for lunch; head out after breakfast with a picnic lunch; or a favourite, pack two picnics and spend the whole day exploring the Mara.</image:caption>
